“Green” means more steel consumed…
SBB 23 February 2011 The US wing of Spanish firm Corporacion Gestamp is opening a 75,000-square foot steel fabrication facility in Surprise, Arizona.
The facility will produce steel towers and components for the firm’s photovoltaic and concentrating solar power structures, as well as serve as the US headquarters of Gestamp Renewable’s Gestamp Solar Steel division, Steel Business Briefing notes.
“With a favorable business climate, strong policy initiatives and proximity to California’s large market for renewable energy, Arizona is fast becoming a hub for companies who provide manufacturing and services related to development of solar energy,” the company said in a statement.
Gestamp Renewable recently announced a joint venture with Worthington Energy Group to produce wind tower turbines in Wyoming. Though it’s unclear how much steel the solar facility will consume, the wind tower facility is expected to consume about 36,000 tonnes per year, primarily consisting of steel plate.
